HIGH-DOSE RATE (HDR) BRACHYTHERAPY

High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy at FROS Radiation Oncology
Cyberknife Center

The physicians at FROS have extensive training and experience in high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy. High dose rate (HDR) is a technically advanced form of brachytherapy. A high intensity radiation source is delivered with millimeter precision under computer guidance directly into the tumor killing it from the inside out while avoiding injury to surrounding normal healthy tissue.

  • Because cancer often affects organs that are essential to daily functioning, it is important for radiation treatment to be tightly focused on tumors to avoid serious side effects.
  • Before each HDR brachytherapy treatment, we check the position of the catheters with millimeter precision.During treatment, our doctors insert tiny, hollow catheters directly into tumors to deliver a precise, three-dimensional dose of radiation.
  • Next, a series of radioactive pellets are inserted into each catheter. Computer guidance controls how far the pellet goes into the catheter and how long the pellet stays in the catheter to release its radiation dose.
  • With HDR brachytherapy, the implant is removed from the body after each treatment.

With a few well-placed catheters, HDR brachytherapy can provide a very precise treatment for cancer in just a few minutes.

The fundamental features of brachytherapy translate into tangible benefits for patients and healthcare services. Brachytherapy can result in shorter treatment times, minimizing disruption to patients and allowing a faster return to everyday life. Furthermore, treatment is well tolerated and helps to preserve quality of life.

Most types of cancer respond well to HDR brachytherapy. At FROS we specialize in HDR brachtherapy treatments of the head and neck, cervix and breast. In fact, some cancers that were considered to be incurable only a few years ago can now be effectively controlled with this highly targeted radiation treatment.

At FROS Radiation Oncology Cyberknife Center, our team is committed to bringing leading-edge technology with highly compassionate care to our patients.

ACCELERATED PARTIAL BREAST IRRADIATION (APBI)

Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation Therapy at FROS Radiation Oncology
Cyberknife Center in New York

5-Day Breast Cancer Treatment

At FROS our experienced doctors may administer APBI treatments via Accuboost HDR brachytherapy or through the Cyberknife Radiosurgery System.
With APBI, the radiation treatment is focused specifically on the part of the breast where the tumor was removed. This allows the radiation to be contained to the tumor cavity as much as possible. Because the radiation is so targeted, it affects less of the healthy tissue and organs close to the breasts, including the lungs, heart, ribs, muscles and skin.
At FROS this breast cancer treatment is given in a more condensed schedule than some other radiation therapies for breast cancer. APBI allows breast cancer to be treated with radiation therapy in five days instead of six to seven weeks.
Requirements for this type of treatment typically include a small tumor, clear surgical margins after a lumpectomy, and preferably no lymph nodes containing cancer. Thus, APBI may be a suitable treatment option for women with early stage breast cancer.

At FROS Radiation Oncology Cyberknife Center, our team is committed to bringing leading-edge technology with highly compassionate care to our patients.

INTENSITY MODULATED RADIATION THERAPY (IMRT)

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy at FROS Radiation Oncology
Cyberknife Center

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy delivers highly precise beams of radiation directly into a cancer. This is achieved by using computer controlled small radiation shields in a linear accelerator. Dozens of uniquely shaped shields are delivered to the patient using various angles and approaches. The pinpoint accuracy of IMRT is so advanced, it can be programmed to actually wrap and angle beams around normal tissue and organs, while protecting healthy tissue as it destroys the tumor.

As such, IMRT patients typically experience fewer side effects of high-dose radiation, which helps them to remain stronger and lead more normal lifestyles during treatment. IMRT is used to treat many kinds of cancers including prostate, breast, head and neck, lung and brain tumors. IMRT is a particularly beneficial tool if you have had radiation treatment in the past.

At FROS Radiation Oncology Cyberknife Center, our team is committed to bringing leading-edge technology with highly compassionate care to our patients.

IMAGE-GUIDED RADIATION THERAPY

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy at FROS Radiation Oncology Cyberknife Center

Our doctors use Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), one of the most cutting-edge innovations in cancer treatment technology available.

Tumors can move, because of breathing and other movement in the body. IGRT allows our doctors to locate and track the tumor at the time of treatment. With this technology, we can deliver precise radiation treatment to tumors that shift as a result of breathing and movement of the bladder and bowels.

IGRT also allows our radiation oncologists to make technical adjustments when a tumor moves outside of the planned treatment range. As a result, the radiation treatment is targeted to the tumor as much as possible, helping to limit radiation exposure to healthy tissue and reduce common radiation side effects.

The advanced imaging equipment at our centers is new and state-of-the-art to help our clinicians deliver the highest standard of care to our patients.

At FROS Radiation Oncology Cyberknife Center, our team is committed to bringing leading-edge technology with highly compassionate care to our patients.
