Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy delivers highly precise beams of radiation directly into a cancer. This is achieved by using computer controlled small radiation shields in a linear accelerator. Dozens of uniquely shaped fields are delivered to the patient using various angles and approaches. The pinpoint accuracy of the IMRTis so advanced, it can be programmed to actually wrap and angle beams around normal tissue and organs, while protecting healthy tissue as it destroys the tumor.
